A pneumatic drill, also known as an air drill, is a good choice for those who find themselves spending more time in the workshop than ever. It is the choice of professionals who do constant drilling work because of their efficiency and known lesser cost to operate and maintain.
Because an air drill is run only by compressed air, it has several advantages over an electrically-powered one.
Drill Electric
Less weight
An air drill is lighter because it has fewer parts. The bulk of an electric drill's weight comes from the DC motor which is heavy because it needs to produce high speeds and torque. Remove that in an air drill and all you have left is the casing, head, and the air tubes.
Increased productivity
Handling a lighter drill will lead to less fatigue. Because of such, long and constant drilling can be achieved and you can have more work done in a shorter span of time.
Less cost to operate
A pneumatic drill obviously does not use electricity. Although technically, electricity (or gas) is still needed to operate the compressor that runs the tool, it costs less because a compressor only uses bursts of energy-to fill the tank.
Less cost to maintain
Because it has fewer parts, there are lesser chances for things to break. An electric drill uses an electric motor which will at one point inevitably need servicing or rewinding. For an air drill, the only maintenance cost you need is regular oiling.
More ergonomic designs
Going back to its lighter weight and fewer moving parts, manufacturers now have more ways of designing a drill. They can make it slimmer and easier to handle, and they can make it smaller and use unconventional but more comfortable shapes-all of which adds to ease-of use.
